Após a curta vida dos Jack Kirby Comics Industry Awards (1985-1987) ter terminado em disputa e originado a criação de 2 novos prémios, os Eisner Awards e os Harvey Awards, estes últimos foram anualmente atribuídos desde 1988 em diversos eventos até se estabelecerem durante uma década (2006-2016) na Baltimore Comic-Con.

Não gozando da mesma popularidade dos Eisner, os prémios com o nome de Harvey Kurtzman foram substituídos este ano na Baltimore Comic-Con pelos Ringo Awards, cuja denominação homenageia o autor Mike Wieringo, falecido há uma década com 44 anos.

O anual Mike Wieringo Comic Book Industry Awards tem a particularidade de incluir a participação de fãs na nomeação das obras, bem como um júri composto por profissionais da indústria da banda desenhada norte-americana.

A cerimónia de entrega dos primeiros vencedores teve lugar no dia 23 de setembro. Os galardoados com múltiplos prémios foram John LewisAndrew Aydin Nate Powell com a sua BD March: Book III, vencedora de 2 galardões, Skottie Young, reconhecido como Best Cartoonist e simultaneamente pela sua BD I Hate Fairyland na categoria de Best Humor Comic. Por outro lado, Tom King, galardoado na categoria de Best Writer, viu também a série Vision ter direito ao prémio Best Series.

Das diferentes obras e autores premiados referentes ao período a que se referem os Prémios Ringo 2017, somente o trabalho em Saga de Fiona Staples tem vindo a ser publicado no nosso país pela G. Floy. No que toca às restantes obras nomeadas, a Devir encontra-se a publicar Paper Girls. Por outro lado, no que toca às tiras de BD nomeadas, a Bizâncio não publica álbuns de Pérolas a Porcos há 3 anos e a Gradiva e Devir deixaram de publicar respetivamente FoxTrot (no final de 2006, a tira cómica abandonou a periodicidade diária para se tornar exclusivamente dominical) há 10 anos e Mutts (após se ter iniciado na BaleiAzul) há 15 anos.
